Short answer: yes, you can eat and drink in a Waymo. Waymo's Rider Rules don't ban food, but they do charge for messes: $50 if you report it yourself during the ride, $100 for a first unreported mess, and up to the full cleaning cost for repeat cases. Alcohol is never allowed.

"Can I eat in a Waymo?" is one of the most common questions from first-time riders, and the answer surprises people because most rideshare drivers say no. Waymo has no driver to say no, so the rule is written as a fee instead of a ban. Here is how it works in practice. For every other rule (pets, luggage, guests), see our full guide to Waymo's rules.

What Waymo's rules actually say

Waymo's One Rider Rules list what is not allowed in the car: drugs and alcohol, smoking and vaping, pets (other than service animals), weapons and riding without a seat belt. Food and non-alcoholic drinks are not on that list. What the rules do cover is the result of eating: leaving the car dirty for the next rider.

What you bringAllowed?Risk
Bottled water, coffee with a lid, sodaYesLow; spills are the only risk
Snacks, a sandwich, a granola barYesLow if you take the wrapper with you
Takeout you carry home (sealed bag)YesLow; keep it upright on the floor
Open takeout eaten in the car (fries, tacos, noodles)Not bannedMedium to high: crumbs, sauce and smells
Beer, wine or any alcoholNoBanned, even where drinking in public is legal

Cleaning fees: what a mess costs

  • $50 if you report the mess in the app during the ride.
  • $100 for a first mess that you don't report.
  • Up to the full cost of cleaning for later violations, and your account standing can be affected.
  • Damage (a stained or torn seat, for example) is charged at Waymo's discretion, based on repair costs.

Spilled something? Report it in the Waymo app before you get out. It halves the fee, and the car's cameras will probably find the mess anyway.

How Waymo checks the car between rides

Every Waymo car has cameras inside the cabin. Waymo and Uber both say they are used, among other things, to make sure the cars stay clean and to spot items left behind. That is how an unreported spill turns into a $100 charge after you've walked away. Microphones are only active if you call Rider Support during the ride.

Practical tips for eating in a robotaxi

  • Pick drinks with a lid. Waymo cars brake smoothly, but a sudden stop can still happen.
  • Keep takeout bags on the floor, not on the seat.
  • Avoid strong-smelling food. The next rider gets in minutes after you leave.
  • Take all wrappers and cups with you. There is no driver to hand them to and no bin in the car.
  • If something spills, use the app to report it right away.

Alcohol: never in the car

Waymo bans any alcohol or drug use inside the car, "regardless of whether permitted by local law". That matters in places like the Las Vegas Strip, where walking with an open drink is legal: you still can't bring it into a Waymo. Finish your drink before the car arrives.

What about Tesla Robotaxi and Zoox?

Tesla Robotaxi: Tesla's Rider Rules ask you to leave the car as you found it and say Tesla can charge a fee for dirtying or damaging the vehicle. Alcohol, drugs and open containers are banned. Food is not mentioned specifically.

Zoox: Zoox doesn't publish a fee table like Waymo's. In July 2026 the company said it had redesigned its cabin materials to be easier to wipe clean after riders smoked and got sick inside, which tells you messes do happen. Treat it like any other shared car.

The bottom line

A coffee or a snack in a Waymo is fine. A full meal is allowed but risky, and alcohol is banned. If you're riding to the airport with food for the flight, keep it sealed until you're at the gate. Frequently asked questions

Can you eat in a Waymo?

Yes. Waymo's Rider Rules don't ban food or drinks. You pay a cleaning fee if you leave a mess: $50 if you report it during the ride, $100 for a first unreported mess, and up to the full cleaning cost after that.

Can you drink coffee or soda in a Waymo?

Yes. Non-alcoholic drinks are fine. A cup with a lid is the safest choice, and if you spill, report it in the app before you get out to pay the lower $50 fee.

Can you drink alcohol in a Waymo?

No. Waymo bans any alcohol or drug use inside the car, even in cities where it would otherwise be legal. Tesla Robotaxi also bans open containers.

How does Waymo know if I left a mess?

Waymo cars have cabin cameras that are used, among other things, to check that the car is clean between rides. If a mess is found after you leave and you didn't report it, the $100 fee can apply.

Can you eat in a Waymo booked through Uber?

The same car and the same Waymo rules apply. Uber's Waymo page doesn't add food rules of its own, so treat the ride like any other Waymo trip.
