Short answer: a typical Waymo ride costs about the same as an Uber Comfort: in an independent study of the San Francisco Bay Area, the average Waymo fare was $19.69 (late 2025), against $17.47 for Uber and $15.47 for Lyft, and Waymo prices rose about 18% in spring 2026. Waymo shows the exact price before you book, charges more at busy times, and there's no tip.

Waymo doesn't publish a rate card. What we know comes from three places: Waymo's own pricing rules, independent price studies, and rates reported by trackers. We label each clearly below. For a head-to-head with Uber, see Waymo vs Uber.

How Waymo sets the price (published)

  • Upfront price: "you'll always know your trip cost before you book."
  • Most direct route: the fare is based on the most direct route and doesn't change if the car re-routes.
  • Demand: prices "may be higher at busy times, such as nights and weekends."
  • Changes cost extra: changing the destination mid-trip, adding stops or cancelling late can change what you pay.
  • No tip: there is no driver and no tip option.

What riders actually pay (measured)

The ride-hailing comparison app Obi has run the largest public price studies of Waymo, by sending identical ride requests to several apps at the same time.

Service (Bay Area)Average fare, Apr 2025 dataAverage fare, Nov 27, 2025 to Jan 1, 2026Change
Waymo$20.43$19.69−3.6%
Uber$15.58$17.47+12%
Lyft$14.44$15.47+7%

In a follow-up covering March 1 to April 14, 2026 in San Francisco, Obi reported that average fares rose 18% for Waymo, 5% for Uber and 12% for Lyft compared with late 2025, while Waymo's price per mile rose only 4%. In other words, an average Waymo ride in San Francisco in spring 2026 was in the low $20s.

A rough per-mile formula (reported)

For Las Vegas, where Waymo began rides in September 2026, an independent tracker reported a fare structure of about $9.49 base + $1.23 per mile + $0.45 per minute, before demand adjustments. Waymo hasn't confirmed it and rates differ by city, but it is useful for a ballpark:

Example tripEstimate with reported Las Vegas rates
2 miles, 8 minutesabout $15.55
5 miles, 15 minutesabout $22.39
10 miles, 25 minutesabout $33.04

Our estimates: base + miles × $1.23 + minutes × $0.45. Real prices can be higher at peak times and differ by city.

Fees that can be added

  • Cleaning: $50 if you report a mess during the ride, $100 for a first unreported mess, more for repeat violations.
  • Smoking or vaping: $100 for a first violation.
  • Damage: charged based on the repair cost.
  • Tolls and trip changes: can change the final price.

Rules behind each fee are in Waymo rules.

Ways to pay less

  • Ride off-peak. Weekday middays are usually cheaper than Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Walk a block or two out of event zones before booking.
  • Waymo Premier: an invite-only membership launched June 11, 2026 (reported at $29.99 a month) with priority pickups and Waymo Cash back on rides. Worth it only for frequent riders.
  • Business profiles: if your employer has a Waymo business account, hail under your business profile to get its discount.
  • Austin, Atlanta and Nashville: through Uber or Lyft you pay the normal fare of the ride type you requested.

How Waymo compares

Waymo is usually a bit more expensive than UberX and Lyft and roughly in line with premium tiers. Tesla Robotaxi has been much cheaper (around $8 to $15 per ride in Obi's data), with longer waits and fewer cities. See Tesla Robotaxi vs Waymo.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 5-mile Waymo ride?

Waymo doesn't publish per-mile rates. Using the rate structure a tracker reported for Las Vegas (about $9.49 base, $1.23 per mile and $0.45 per minute), a 5-mile, 15-minute trip would come to about $22 before demand adjustments. The app always shows the exact price before you book.

Is Waymo more expensive than Uber?

Usually a little. In Obi's Bay Area study of late 2025, Waymo averaged $19.69 per ride against $17.47 for Uber and $15.47 for Lyft. The gap had narrowed from 2025, then Waymo prices rose again in spring 2026.

Does Waymo have surge pricing?

Waymo says prices may be higher at busy times, such as nights and weekends. You always see the price before you book, and it doesn't change if the car re-routes.

Is there a Waymo subscription?

Waymo Premier, launched in June 2026, is an invite-only membership (reported at $29.99 a month) with priority pickups and Waymo Cash back on rides.
