Short answer: as of October 21, 2026, the public can ride a driverless robotaxi in 15 US metro areas, led by Waymo, which is open to everyone in 12 of them with its own app, works through Uber in Austin and Atlanta, and is letting riders in gradually in Las Vegas. Tesla carries paying riders in six Texas and Florida cities, and Zoox charges for rides in Las Vegas. Outside the US, Dubai and Abu Dhabi offer fully driverless rides in the Uber app.

This page is our master tracker. Each row is one company in one city, with its status, the app you need and whether it serves the airport. City names with a link have their own guide. For Waymo only, see every Waymo city.

Robotaxis outside the US

The Middle East has moved fastest for visitors: in Dubai and Abu Dhabi you can be matched with a car with nobody at the wheel simply by ordering an UberX or Uber Comfort in the right area. London has autonomous cars on Uber, but with a licensed safety driver aboard. See our guides to Dubai and Abu Dhabi and London.

China runs some of the largest driverless fleets in the world (Baidu's Apollo Go, Pony.ai and WeRide in cities such as Wuhan, Beijing, Guangzhou and Shenzhen), but booking usually requires local apps and a Chinese phone number. We will add a visitor's guide.

How to read the status labels

  • Open to all
  • Rolling invitations
  • Via Uber or Lyft
  • Safety driver or monitor aboard
  • Testing or employees only
  • Announced
  • Open to all: download the app, sign up and ride. You still need to be 18 or older to hold an account with most services.
  • Via Uber or Lyft: you can't book the robotaxi directly. You order a normal ride and may be matched with one. In Uber, you raise your chances by switching on "Autonomous vehicles" in your ride preferences. See how to get a Waymo on Uber or Lyft.
  • Rolling invitations: the service is live, but riders are admitted gradually from an interest list.
  • Supervised: the car drives itself, but a person sits in the driver's or passenger seat and can intervene.
  • Testing: the cars are on the road, sometimes with employees as passengers, but you can't book a ride.

What's coming next

  • Tesla has named Las Vegas, Phoenix, Jacksonville and San Antonio as its next cities, without dates. Nevada has already approved a permit for up to 5,000 Tesla robotaxis.
  • Waymo has announced London and is testing in Toronto, with a launch planned for 2028. Freeway trips, paused in May 2026, are back in Phoenix and expected to return in other cities.
  • Zoox gives free rides from a waitlist in San Francisco and is testing in Austin, Miami, Los Angeles and other cities.
  • Uber and Lyft keep adding partners: Motional in Las Vegas, Avride in Dallas, May Mobility in Atlanta and Nuro in the Bay Area.

Want to know when a service reaches your city? The quickest way is to download the operator's app and join its interest list. We also log every change on this page and in each city guide.

Frequently asked questions

Which city has the most robotaxis?

In the US, the Phoenix area and the San Francisco Bay Area have the largest Waymo service areas, and Austin has the most companies at once (Waymo through Uber, Tesla and Zoox testing). Worldwide, Chinese cities such as Wuhan run some of the largest fully driverless fleets.

Can I ride a robotaxi in New York or Chicago?

Not as of October 2026. Waymo has tested in New York with a safety driver, but no robotaxi service takes public riders in New York or Chicago yet.

Do I need a different app in each city?

Usually you need the operator's own app: Waymo, Tesla Robotaxi or Zoox. The exceptions are Austin and Atlanta, where Waymo is only available through Uber, Nashville, where Waymo is also on Lyft, and Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where driverless cars are matched through Uber.

What does 'rolling invitations' mean?

The company is letting people in gradually from a waitlist. Download the app and sign up; you can ride once your account is invited.

Update log

  • Tracker published with 20 cities and 40 services. Added Waymo's Las Vegas airport launch (Oct 21) and the Oct 14 openings in San Diego, Tampa and San Antonio.
