Short answer: Uber is usually cheaper and quicker to arrive; Waymo is more private, more predictable and, on the data it publishes, safer. In Obi's Bay Area study, the average Waymo ride cost $19.69 vs $17.47 for Uber, and Waymo took 5.7 minutes to arrive vs 3.2 for Uber. Many riders still choose Waymo because there is no driver, no tip and no small talk.

This is the comparison most people make before their first robotaxi ride. We use independent data where it exists and say when we rely on company figures. For all prices, see how much Waymo costs.

Price: Uber usually wins, but the gap moves

In April 2025, Waymo cost about 30% more than Uber on average in Obi's Bay Area data. By the end of 2025 the gap had narrowed to about 13% as Uber prices rose and Waymo's fell slightly. In spring 2026, Waymo's average fare in San Francisco rose 18% while Uber's rose 5%, so the gap widened again. Rule of thumb: Waymo costs about what Uber Comfort costs, and more than UberX. Remember that the Waymo price has no tip on top.

Wait times and trip times

Uber has far more cars, so it usually arrives sooner: 3.15 minutes on average vs 5.74 for Waymo in Obi's study (Lyft was 5.14, Tesla 15.32). Trip times can be longer in a Waymo too, because it follows every traffic rule, avoids some tricky maneuvers and, outside Phoenix, hasn't used freeways since May 2026. For a short city trip the difference is small; for a 20-mile trip it can be significant.

Safety

Waymo publishes crash data comparing its cars with human drivers on the same kinds of roads. Through June 2026, across more than 270 million fully driverless miles, it reports 82% fewer injury crashes and 95% fewer crashes causing serious injury or worse. There's no public crash dataset for Uber drivers to compare directly, and Waymo has had recalls and investigations. Our analysis is in is Waymo safe?

Comfort and experience

  • Waymo: a clean electric car, your own music and temperature, no conversation, and the same smooth driving style every time. Some riders find the cautious driving slow.
  • Uber: a person who can help with bags, adapt to odd pickup spots and take any route, but quality varies from driver to driver.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Waymo for late nights alone, short and medium trips inside the service area, and when you'd rather not talk or tip.
  • Choose Uber for the cheapest fare, airports Waymo doesn't serve (LAX, MIA), long freeway trips, pets and trips outside the service area.
  • In Austin and Atlanta you don't have to choose: request UberX or Comfort with autonomous rides switched on and you may get a Waymo at the Uber price. See Waymo on Uber.

Frequently asked questions

Is Waymo cheaper than Uber?

Usually not. In the Bay Area Obi found Waymo averaged $19.69 per ride against $17.47 for Uber (late 2025), and Waymo prices rose further in spring 2026. Waymo is often closer to Uber Comfort than to UberX.

Is Waymo faster than Uber?

Pickup takes longer: average waits were 5.74 minutes for Waymo against 3.15 for Uber in Obi's Bay Area data. Trips can also be slower while Waymo's freeway service is paused outside Phoenix.

Is Waymo safer than Uber?

Waymo's own peer-reviewed comparisons show 82% fewer injury crashes than human drivers on the same roads. There is no equivalent public dataset for Uber drivers specifically, so a direct comparison isn't possible.

Can I get a Waymo through Uber?

In Austin and Atlanta, yes: Waymo is only available through Uber there. In Nashville it's on Lyft. Elsewhere you need the Waymo app.
