Short answer: Zoox is Amazon's robotaxi, a four-seat electric pod with no steering wheel. It charges for rides in Las Vegas (since August 10, 2026) between set stops on and around the Strip and at the airport, booked in the Zoox app. In San Francisco it gives free rides to people on its waitlist. It is testing in Austin, Miami and other cities.
Zoox is the most futuristic-looking robotaxi on US roads: it drives in both directions, has no front or back, and passengers sit facing each other. Amazon bought the company in 2020. Here is what a rider needs to know.

Riding Zoox in Las Vegas
Las Vegas is Zoox's main market. It opened free public rides in September 2025 and began charging on August 10, 2026, after the federal safety regulator NHTSA cleared its vehicle for commercial service. Instead of door-to-door trips, Zoox uses set stops, usually each venue's ride-hail area:
- Most major Strip hotels and Resorts World
- Las Vegas Convention Center
- Sphere and T-Mobile Arena
- AREA15 and Topgolf
- Harry Reid International Airport, Terminals 1 and 3
Hours were 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. in a September 2026 check. Full Las Vegas details, including Waymo, are in robotaxis in Las Vegas.
How to ride Zoox
- Download the Zoox app and create an account.
- Choose a pickup and a destination from the list of stops.
- Check the fare shown before booking; a longer route doesn't change it.
- Go to the stop's ride-hail area, find your Zoox and unlock it in the app.
- Sit on either bench and buckle up. Up to four riders.
What Zoox costs
Zoox hasn't published a base fare. It says fares combine a base fare with distance and time, plus taxes, and that it targets prices similar to the "comfort" tier of ride-hail apps. Some trips carry destination fees: the airport, Sphere and T-Mobile Arena are named. The app shows the full price before you confirm.
Zoox outside Las Vegas
- San Francisco: free rides for people admitted from the public waitlist. California doesn't yet allow Zoox to charge.
- Austin and Miami: rides for employees, friends and family since spring 2026; a public waitlist is expected.
- Los Angeles, Atlanta, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, San Diego: testing only.
- Uber: Zoox has announced it will also be bookable through Uber in Las Vegas.
Zoox vs Waymo vs Tesla
Zoox is the only one of the three built from scratch as a robotaxi with no manual controls (Tesla's Cybercab is similar but seats two). That makes it roomier for groups of four, but it depends on federal approval for vehicles without steering wheels and, so far, on fixed stops. See Tesla Robotaxi and the city tracker.
